BIOGRAPHY

DJ: Hussla D has been a pivotal force behind the Jah Troopers movement, starting as the main DJ/Selector and evolving into an executive producer for all productions. Besides his contributions to Jah Troopers, Hussla D also performs as a solo DJ. In 2006, he was discovered by BBC 1Xtra, where he delivered five series of the Xtra Talent show, leading to features on other BBC stations, including the Asian Network.

Throughout his career, Hussla D has hosted club nights, concerts, festivals, and corporate events, sharing stages with top names in Reggae, Hip Hop, RnB, UKG, and Grime. He has supported many artists as a tour DJ, notably DJing for the King Stur Gav Sound System alongside legends like Daddy U Roy, Brigadier Jerry, Josey Wales and others.

Producer/Artist:
Hussla’s journey into production began with recording dubplates for the sound. In his early teens, financial constraints preventing him from being able to afford big name artists taught him to be creative. As an alternative he would record local up coming artists and write special versions of songs for them to record. This initiative built a roster of artists ready to perform at Jah Troopers events, earning him an artist development role, coaching and mentoring young talent.

As he honed his production skills, Hussla started producing these artists and creating collaborative projects. His first project, ‘The A-Block Mixtape,’ featured various local artists from his local area known as the A-Block. This was followed by the Troopers Track Sampler, released with the UK rave brand Sidewinder Raw.

In 2011, he released his own mixtape, ‘Fistful of Dandymite,’ showcasing his vocals and guest artists. Although he started in Reggae, by this time, he had explored other genres like Hip Hop, RnB, Garage, Grime, and EDM. This was followed by his first official release, ‘For My Brother,’ was a tribute to his brother DJ Spess, who passed away and was also a founding member of Jah Troopers.

Hussla’s next major project was the 2015 EP ‘Ignite,’ a return to conscious Reggae. He formed the Ignite Band to tour the EP across the UK, headlining shows at popular live music venues like Brixton Hootananny.

As a vocalist, Hussla D collaborates with various artists and producers, featuring on tracks with producers such as King Jammy (Jamaica), Mark Top Secret (Jamaica), Zebbylion (UK), Mr Patez (Netherlands), DJ Jeren (Costa Rica), and RD Musiq (Netherlands). He has also worked with artists like JR Kenna and Maikal X.

Currently, Hussla focuses on his DJ/producer outfit, releasing singles with guest artists. His most notable project is the single ‘Skanking In The Dancehall‘ with King Jammy, part of a larger project connecting older and younger generations. He is also working on a series of EPs with new artists.

BIOGRAPHY

Ras Xprshn’s musical journey began in the mid-1980s in the UK, inspired by the vibrant Sound System Culture, including influences from Saxon, Unity Hi-Fi, and Coxsone.

Initially, Xprshn was part of a sound system called “Finesse” in his hometown, which later merged with “Studio Classic” to form “Studio Mix Sound.” Known then as “The Kernel,” he was a prominent DJ/MC for the group. Studio Mix Sound gained national recognition, supporting international acts like Maxi Priest, Peter Metro, Major Makrel, and more.

As he evolved, Xprshn transitioned from being an MC to a professional recording artist. Embracing the Rastafari faith, his lyrics took on a conscious tone, addressing social injustices, and he adopted the name Ras Xprshn to reflect his new perspective.

During the late 90s, when it seemed that the sound system culture was being pushed to the back by other more popular genres, Xprshn felt compelled to mentor the next generation. Working with other members of the community he co-founded The Kemet Musical Production Association, a music school and event organisation. In 1998, he discovered a talented group of youngsters who he booked for an event. At the time the group didn’t have a name but now needed a name so they could be featured on the flyer. The group decided on the name ‘Jah Troopers’ and this marked the first official booking for the group, and the rest is history.

Xprshn began working very closely with Jah Troopers and as the group developed they became one of the UK’s leading sound systems for developing talent, organising events from local to international acts and bridging cultural gaps. Xprshn played multiple roles within Jah Troopers, including performing artist, music producer, live event sound engineer, and event manager. With the group Xprshn performed with acts like Wailing Souls, Fantan Mojah, Coxsone Sound, Jah Love Sound System, and David Rodigan, and appeared on national radio stations like BBC 1xtra.

In 2010, fulfilling a long-held goal, Xprshn repatriated to Ethiopia, driven by his reawakened Rastafari faith. Since being in Ethiopia he’s established Crouching Lion Recordings, an independent label and studio supporting Ethiopian reggae artists. Some of his notable works are mix and master of albums like “Mountain Top” by Ras Seyoum and international releases War Is Not The Answer Riddim, Caribbean Storm Riddim, and Marathon of Love Riddim, instigating cross-market relationships between UK and Ethiopian artists.

Xprshn done a short stint with African Wendem Sound System as a live artist and MC, alongside Tyga Simeon and Bradda Jahzeal. The group built reputation as one of Addis Ababa’s leading sound systems, hosting international acts like Yaadcore and Jah 9.

Xprshn has become a reputable sound engineer in Addis Ababa, working with local and international acts such as Tsedi and Stone Bwoy. He has been resident sound engineer at venue such as Villa Verde, and has now launched Rebel Unit sound system which we hires our for events as a PA system collaborating with King Darius.

LIKKLE BRIGGIE

BIOGRAPHY

Likkle Briggie, also known as TJ, hails from a rich musical lineage as the son of Brigadier Jerry and nephew of Sister Nancy and Jeremiah. Raised in Barbican, Kingston, Jamaica, he discovered his passion for Dee-Jay-ing at a young age. His journey began in earnest when he remembers the first time meeting his father at a Bass Odyssey Dance at age 7, an experience that cemented his calling.

Despite his parents living in the United States, Briggie’s guardian he lived with in Jamaica nurtured his talent, taking him to dances and shows. Being members of the 12 Tribes of Israel (Rastafarian organisation) he would regularly attend these events and follow the Twelve Tribe of Israel Sound “Jah Love Muzik”.

This exposed him to travelling around the Island and acted as a training ground as he would get the opportunity to Dee-Jay on the sound with the established Dee-Jays and Artists such as Jeremiah (Uncle), Culture Dan and Rassy Hardknocks. Regular guests Artists on the sound were the likes of Charlie ChaplinJosey WalesBuju Banton and Luciano to name a few.

His first studio recording came during high school with the 12 Tribes Of Israel’s Orthodox record label. Sangie Davis who was part of the label was working on an album with Dan Hudson and The Seers. They had a track called “Wise Father” and wanted a young artist to feature on the track. With already establishing his reputation they approached him for the feature. A few days later he was picked him up from school and carried to Studio 2000 where producer Steely recorded his feature on the track.

Unfortunately, after being expelled from school, he moved to England. He resided in Manchester as this is where he had family and friends through 12 Tribes. Being a regularly attendee at the 12 Tribe HQ he would often Dee-Jay on the 12 Tribe Sound and feature on Stage show events.

Connecting with other youngsters within the organisation they began working together and formed their own sound “Music Mafia”. Being UK based the vibe was different to what Briggie was used to as they would include other music genres such as UK Garage and Grime. Briggie adapted to the new styles and would transpose his Reggae lyrics to fit. Music Mafia worked closely with Northampton based sound system Jah Troopers and would regularly do coach trips to and throw. Jah Troopers as a more Reggae influenced sound and established brand was a more ideal suit for a Dee-jay of Briggies calibre, and once he began working with the group he relocated to Northampton and became an official member.

After a stint in the UK, Briggie returned to Jamaica in 2004, where he connected with Exile di Brave.

At the time Exhile was known for his Hip Hop remixes and had a small project based studio in Papine. This become a regular meeting spot for Briggie and the likes of Michah ShemiahEesah AckimeHempress SativaKazam Davis and Rassy Hardknocks, where they would cook food and use wi-fi. As a collective they would work together on songs.

The first major project that came from this collective was Micah Shemiah’s “Dread at control” which featured Hempress Sativa, TJ (Likkle Briggie), Eesah & Infinite. The song was released on 7” and 12” vinyl and the music video was filmed at the Kingston Dub Club as a tribute to the event organiser Gabre Selassie.

Up until this point Briggie was a Sound System Dee-Jay with all his lyrics being freestyles. This encouraged him to actually start writing his songs which lead to the recording of his debut EP “The Rising of the Son”.

One Thursday the group was chilling at the studio and a friend that was going back to Europe stopped by and left them with two turn tables and a mixer. That evening the group strung up the turn tables and ran a live session. This was the start of “Vinyl Thursdays” which a grew to be an internationally renown weekly session, attracting university students, tourists and veteran artists such as Lone RangerEek a MouseCarl Dawkins and Brigadier Jerry himself.

Here the group built their “King Harar Sound System” recruiting DJ Natty a record salesman from Chyna as the selector.

DJ Natty was also a producer and went on to producing a collaboration track with Likkle Briggie and Kumar from the Raging Fire band. Briggie has also collaborated on a projects with Lady G and most recently with Italian Reggae singer Giallo Man.

As a brand endorsement Briggie was one of the faces for Yaadcores event brand “Dubwise” doing a national promo on daytime TV.

In addition to music Briggie is no stranger to the camera and has featured in TV commercials for US EmbassyNational Cream Crackers and Juicy Patti. In 2018 his authentic style attracted the attention of Levi’s Clothing who asked him to feature in a photoshoot that drew influence from the iconic 1978 film Rockers.

Sound System Culture in Ethiopia

On October 7th 2022 in Bahir Dar, Ethiopia, Jah Troopers tested their new sound system which they built-in Ethiopia, creating history as the first Sound System team to repatriate to Ethiopia, Africa’, a statement and a cry of many Artists, Musicians and Rastafarians since the 1930’s when His Imperial Majesty Emperor Haile Selassie I was crowned, creating a global awareness of Africa, especially Ethiopia.

Ethiopia Launch

Over the past decade, members of the team have been relocating to Ethiopia and setting foundations for their families. With prominent members of the team all being present and settled in Ethiopia 2022 marked the year for the Sound to officially make its stamp and showcase Jah Troopers Sound System publicly.

The Sound test was held at the Caribbean / Ethiopian restaurant Bahir Dar Breeze which is situated near to the City centre, with beautiful scenery looking over Lake Tana, headwaters of the Nile. The event was not a public event but customers in the restaurant were able to sit in and enjoy the experience while eating their tasty dishes.

Taking it back to the foundation

Jah Troopers Sound is diverse in their styles of playing and music selection but for this event they took it back to their Reggae roots and played in the original sound system style with the manipulation of sound effects, echo delays, bass cuts, reverb and riddim chopping also known as ‘mixing’, with live Toasters / MCs freestyling over dub/instrumental versions of the songs the selector played, known in sound system culture as ‘the part 2’

The team performing was founding member Hussla D selecting, Preacher Levi (veteran Sound System MC) and Jah Troopers UK Manager since 2006 and Ras Xprshn (veteran Reggae Artist) and Jah Troopers promoter since 1998.

They were also supported by other UK members of the team who have also repatriated, members of the ex-pat community and members of the local community, demonstrating the true community spirit of Sound System Culture.

Ethiopia Sound System Project

As this was only a test we can expect to see some great developments for Reggae and Sound System Culture in Ethiopia in the near future.

Jah Troopers to release a catalogue of their live recordings from their Sound System sessions playing Reggae, Dancehall and more.

The Sound System phenomenon

Since the birth of Sound system in the 1940’s in Kingston, Jamaica we have seen and heard some great sounds come from every corner of the world. 1000’s of these sounds are no longer active. Some of the owners have passed away, teams have split-up, people have found new careers or settled down with a family and the equipment and records have been sold or sitting down dusty in a garage or cellar and the Sound and how they played is just a memory which will die with those who share the memories.

Importance of recordings

This highlights the importance of audio and where possible video recordings. History has shown the sounds that recorded their sessions live on long after their active years and with the growth of the internet with download and streaming platforms has made this more impactive on a global scale.

Promotion tool for Sound Systems

Even throughout the golden eras of sound system, Reggae sound system cassette tapes played a big role in prompting the sounds and were the main vehicle for people around the world to hear the sounds play without physically being at the dance. This is how we the world knows about some of the giants in the business.

Jah Troopers Legacy

Jah Troopers built a reputation for the live recordings, starting on cassette then advanced to CD then downloads and streaming. The Sound limited their performances to special occasions in 2018 when then also ended their weekly radio show ‘Vibes Machine Run’ on Inspiration FM which had been running since 2002. Focusing on behind the scenes music work the sound has remained in the public through their live recordings uploaded on various platforms online.

Jah Troopers Audio Archives

As a new product within the Jah Troopers Music brand they plan to release a catalogue of live recordings as part of their ‘Audio Archives’ series. The first release is a session from 2003 in the UK with Likkle Briggie son of legendary Dee-Jay Brigadier Jerry
